The Region of Tuscany in Expo 2015, between art, culture, local products, landscapes and inimitable cities
“Tuscany is a land of food, art, culture, research and also good citizenship. We want to establish cultural bridges with the entire world and in this context we have included Tuscany as a laboratory for investigating good living. More than 200 researchers from around the world have already come to Tuscany to work on this issue. We have already held a winter school and will hold a summer school on this theme.”
The Regional Councillor for Agriculture and Forestries, Gianni Salvadori, was interviewed by Vincenzo Pardini in a live broadcast from Palazzo Vecchio in Florence for the ‘Florence and Tuscany in the year of the Expo’ event. He reiterated the main lines of Tuscany’s participation in Expo 2015, with the initiatives promoted by Milan and those that will take place within Tuscany. The Minister of Agriculture and Forestries, Maurizio Martina, and the mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, were also present. Among the research projects funded by the Region and due to be exhibited in Milan, one in particular has taken centre stage: Jellyfish Barge is a floating greenhouse with a futuristic structure designed by a team from the University of Florence, led by Professor Stefano Mancuso, who outlined its characteristics. The project was also selected as one of the five global finalists of an international award established by the United Nations.
“The greenhouse, which uses clean energy such as the sun, wind and waves, is able to produce plants without using soil, but rather by using desalinated water from the sea,” added Professor Mancuso. “It will be able to respond to the planet’s food needs.”
The broadcast began with the participation of Silvia Burzagli, Deputy Director of Toscana Promozione, and Elisa Guidi, from Artex, who outlined Tuscany’s claim for its participation in Expo: “For centuries, we have lived in the future.” They also explained the meaning of the logo designed by Alessandro Mendini, an architect and designer of international renown, which, as Burzagli explained, “represents all of Tuscany”: its art and its artists, its landscapes, its products, its cities, its countryside, skills and the tenacity of its inhabitants. These features were the protagonists of the video that introduced the evening in a kaleidoscope of images that showed all of the area’s beauty and exceptional versatility.
