Record-breaking year for italian museums
“2015 was a golden year for Italian museums”, according to Minister for Cultural Heritage and Tourism, Dario Franceschini, presenting the 2015 Italian museum figures to the permanent tourism committee. “Around 43 million people visited State-owned cultural heritage sites”, commented Mr Franceschini, “generating around 155 million euros in cash flow, which will be entirely devolved to the museums through a rewards system that encourages the best management styles and supports smaller sites.” “This is the best result ever achieved in our country’s history, an absolute record for Italian museums”, he added, continuing “the growth in visitors and takings was significant even when compared with 2014, when the figures were also very high. This is not part of an international trend – quite the opposite”, explained the Minister, “if we look at the figures published in the international press today, we are bucking the trend. In Italy, thanks to the new valorisation policies, in particular the Sundays free of charge initiative, Italians are going back to enjoying their museums. This return to cultural heritage educates, enriches and makes citizens aware of the magnificent history of their own areas”, Mr Franceschini concluded.
