May Every Italian Enjoy the Great Opportunity of Expo With Us
The speech given by Minister Maurizio Martina in Florence at the event ‘Italy 2015: the country in the year of the Expo’
“After the difficult years behind us, a change of pace is now possible and Expo can open this new phase.” So said the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Maurizio Martina, speaking on 28 March in Florence, at the event ‘Italy 2015: the country in the year of the Expo,’ the second large event in view of Expo Milano 2015 after the meeting on 7 February at Hangar Bicocca in Milan.
For Minister Martina, Expo is an opportunity for us to relaunch ourselves, to “plot the course of a kind of manufacturing that is still evolving, crossing over with beauty and technology in increasingly better ways”; to “help us understand that flexibility isn’t enough, we need more and more investment, innovation and human capital”; to “help us to better support the Italian agricultural model, which is made strong by its extraordinary quality but is still fragile in its ability to ensure an adequate income for those who produce from the earth.” In short, it is “an opportunity to understand more about the historical Italian mission to ‘produce things the world likes in the shadow of steeples’, in the words of Carlo Cipolla.”
As Minister Martina was keen to stress, Expo is intended to serve as the voice of that “passionate and confident Italy” made up of companies, regions, associations, schools, research centres and universities: “Two million students will visit the exhibition and over 700 classes are already involved in the educational workshops. Many social and third sector associations have come together for the first time in the history of Expo as part of a great shared project. 1,000 young start-up companies are ready to present themselves in the pavilions and dozens of industry associations have planned initiatives and projects inside and outside the exhibition area. Many municipalities and regions have brought proposals of great impact to life.”
Minister Martina’s speech ended with an appeal, addressed to every Italian: “enjoy this opportunity. May each of us put what we can into it and make the most of this great initiative.”
“What is certain,” concluded Martina, “is that there is a great desire for Italy in the world. Our overseas compatriots in every corner of the planet are well aware of it. We must live up to this demand and be stronger than our limitations and problems. Italy is the home of beauty and Expo is a terrific opportunity. It is the metaphor of the global challenge that our country can take part in and win. Now it’s really up to us to interpret it in the best possible way. We should all feel part of this challenge and see that we are closer and stronger thanks to Expo 2015.”
