Una visita a sorpresa di Papa Francesco ad Amatrice, dove ha incontrato la popolazione colpita dal sisma del 24 agosto. Il Santo Padre si è recato alla scuola provvisoria di Amatrice per incontrare i bambini e gli insegnanti per poi spostarsi nella zona rossa del paese, per rendere omaggio alle vittime del sisma. “Ho pensato bene nei primi giorni di questi tanti dolori che la mia visita, forse, era più un ingombro che un aiuto, che un saluto, e non volevo dare fastidio e per questo ho lasciato passare un pochettino di tempo affinché si sistemassero alcune cose, come la scuola”, ha detto il Santo Padre. “Ma dal primo momento ho sentito che dovevo venire da voi! Semplicemente per dire che vi sono vicino, niente di più, e che prego, prego per voi! Vicinanza e preghiera, questa è la mia offerta a voi. Che il Signore benedica tutti voi, che la Madonna vi custodisca in questo momento di tristezza e dolore e di prova”. Dopo Amatrice, Papa Francesco si è recato anche ad Arquata ed Accumuli.

Pope Francis made a surprise visit to Amatrice, where he met with the people most heavily impacted by the earthquake on 24 August. The Holy Father visited the temporary school of Amatrice, where he meet with the children and teachers, before moving into the town’s red zone, where he paid tribute to the earthquake’s victims. “I thought long and hard in the first days of these many pains that my visit, perhaps, would be more of a hindrance than a help, a greeting. I didn’t want to be a bother so I let a little time pass, so that some things could be resolved, like the school”, the Holy Father explained. “But from the first moment, I felt that I needed to come to you! Simply to express my closeness to you, nothing more. And I pray, pray for you! Solidarity and prayer: this is my offering to you. May the Lord bless you all; may Our Lady watch over you in this moment of sadness, pain, and trial.” After Amatrice, Pope Francis also visited the towns of Arquata and Accumuli.
