Porte aperte a Expo Milano 2015!

The Doors are Open at Expo 2015!
Pope Francis, Premier Renzi and the Frecce Tricolore attended the inauguration
The spectacular flight of the Frecce Tricolore over the site of Expo 2015 officially launched the World Exposition. The inauguration ceremony, which was held at the Open Air Theatre, opened on the morning of Friday 1 May with greetings from the Sole Commissioner Government Representative for Expo Milano 2015, Giuseppe Sala, who thanked “all those who have supported the World Exposition, starting with Emma Bonino, Ermanno Olmi, Carlin Petrini, Salvatore Veca, Giorgio Armani and Andrea Bocelli. But above all,” added Sala, “we owe the fact that we are here to those who worked on the construction of the exhibition site. Expo 2015 is not the result of an Italian miracle, but of devotion that few know how to express and it is wonderful that a significant part of the design and implementation was by a young team.”
Also present was the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, who explained: “It is no longer acceptable that 800 million people worldwide go hungry while others are obese. It is no longer acceptable to live in a world where forests and seas are exploited indiscriminately. This is the message that must start from Milan. The entire city is offering itself up to Expo, including its art, history, solidarity and smiles.”
The President of the Region of Lombardy, Roberto Maroni, also welcomed the delegations of participating countries: “I am honoured and proud to represent the region hosting Expo. It is a fertile land and treasure trove of culture, art and nature. Welcome to Italy’s number one agricultural region, a land of innovation and research with a long industrial tradition. This World Exposition,” he explained, “is already a success, as we know from the numbers of participants, the ticket sales and the visitors coming from all over the world. But it is witnessed even more by the interest aroused in the theme everywhere, in Italy and abroad.”
President of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), Ferdinand Nagy, focussed on the challenges contained in the phrase ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’: “For the next six months, Expo will become the centre of the world. Milan will be known not only as a centre of the financial industry, culture and design: it will be the largest platform for dialogue about food.”
In a live video link from Vatican City, His Holiness Pope Francis also spoke, and said he was “grateful for the opportunity to add my voice to those who gathered at Expo. Jesus taught us to pray, saying, ‘Lord, give us this day our daily bread’. Expo is an opportunity to globalise solidarity. Let’s not waste it, but rather appreciate it fully. So that it doesn’t only remain a theme, it must be accompanied by awareness of the faces of the many people who are hungry, those who do not currently eat in a manner worthy of a human being.”
Another moment of great emotion took place with the delivery of the tricolour flag of the Carabinieri by five workers of Expo Milano 2015 from different nationalities, representing the thousands of workers involved in the exhibition site for the past months.
The Milan ‘Choir of White Voices,’ along with the ‘Choir of the Alpine Corps,’ performed the Italian national anthem, but changed the last line of text: instead of the traditional conclusion “We are ready for death, Italy has called,” the children sang “We are ready for life, Italy has called.”
This version of the anthem by Mameli inspired the President of the Council of Ministers, Matteo Renzi, who also spoke at the ceremony, saying: “Italy has arisen, and we are ready for life. With Expo, we are demonstrating that Italy is proud of its roots and its traditions. Our dizzying past invites us to build and not just to remember. Come and discover the flavour of Italy’s Expo. The gamble has not yet been won, we still have six months to win it. Today,” continued the Premier, “is the beginning of tomorrow. Expo is primarily a space for freedom, a time for discussion for the new generations. We are showing that Italy is proud of its roots and traditions, but the most beautiful page in its history books must be written by us all together.”
Having signed the Charter of Milan, Matteo Renzi declared Expo Milano 2015 officially open.
Among the political authorities who attended the event, the audience also included former Head of State Giorgio Napolitano, Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano, Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni, Defence Minister Roberta Pinotti, Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina, Food and Forestry Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Graziano Delrio.
