We are focusing upon the Campania Brand and return tourism
Corrado Matera, the Regional Councillor for Tourism in the Region of Campania, is dedicated to making tourism his region’s primary industry, and is focused upon reviving this territory and promoting return tourism in all of its forms
While tourism represents a major industry, it is only through the implementation of serious programmatic activities that the entire local economy can be jump started. And in addition to the maritime economy, Campania (one of Italy’s most important regions in this sector) is also home to extremely valuable areas, with historical, cultural and natural centres recognized as Unesco World Heritage Sites, including Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Royal Palace of Caserta, which are linked to major attractors, like Naples, the Islands, and Caserta, which draw millions of visitors. Due to this extraordinary heritage recognized around the world, I am convinced that we should focus upon launching a Campania Brand that’s capable of incorporating all of the tourism features that our region has to offer, just as Governor De Luca himself affirms when he talks about a “world tourism district”. Our Department of Tourism believes in this new outlook on the future, and has launched targeted initiatives aimed at ensuring that tourists in the Campania region will find an extensive range of tourism products and services that fully express this region’s enormous potential.
These initiatives also focus upon return tourism, a phenomenon that is widespread throughout all of Southern Italy, including the Region of Campania. The prospect of visiting the places of one’s own heritage has an extraordinary emotional and cultural appeal, and for this reason we are aiming to satisfy the irrepressible instinct of emigrants from Campania to return “home”, or to visit the “homeland they never knew”, by targeting the second and third generations, and the awarding of the 2019 Summer Universiade to Naples and the Campania region even serves as an extra incentive.
This tourism niche has a different appeal than the typical vacation, because the destinations for these “return” experiences also include less frequented rural areas and small towns, which constitute the true wealth of our parks and tourism districts. And that’s not all: by connecting them well, they can be combined with religious tourism. These types of promotions also have beneficial development dynamics for areas like the Cilento National Park, which is capable of drawing a significant number of visitors and generating a new tourism demand, thus triggering a series of revitalization processes and reducing the current depopulation trend.
This proposal would help to generate tourism on a less seasonal basis in order to exalt the culture, history, traditions, and the food and wine culture of our territory all year round, as these aspects are not bound to the seaside and summertime vacation combination, and are even capable of attracting visitors to our parks in the middle of winter, where the climate is even relatively mild during the coldest months of the year.
Our commitment to promoting this so-called “tourism of origins” therefore has enormous potential for the entire Campania region. Finally, it should also be noted that this tourism segment is also capable of generating outside investments and increased exports, if properly managed. The best renowned economists recognize the existence of a strong correlation between migratory networks and international trade flows. In fact, increased immigration gives rise to an increase in exports from the countries of origin, especially in the food sector, particularly involving local products.
