Collective Challenges, to Be Confronted Together
Success for the VIIth Italy-Latin American and Caribbean Conference in Milan on the 12th and 13th June
In Milan, on 12th and 13th June, the VIIth Italy-Latin American and Caribbean Conference took place. This was the most successful launch of the event organised so far, due to the high level of participation from the public, press, entrepreneurs and professionals, and to the response from large numbers of top representatives from government and national institutions involved. The Conference is held biennially and is the main forum for bringing together and comparing Italy and Latin American countries. The activities take place over two days: the first is Presidential, held at the new Palazzo di Regione Lombardia, the seat of Lombardy’s regional authorities on Friday, 12th June; the second is Ministerial, held in the auditorium of the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2015, on the Saturday morning. The President of the Lombardy Region, Roberto Maroni opened with a welcome speech; followed by greetings from the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, and from the President of the Senate, Pietro Grasso and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni. The contributors were moderated by the Undersecretary, Mario Giro, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Commerce, Michele Valensise, and the Director of the Directorate General for Globalisation and Global Affairs, Luigi Marras.
So many contributors, all with a common vision: Government and Parliament can offer essential support for addressing the major themes revealed in the Conference. Amongst these, Mario Giro took note of the title of this VIIth Conference, ‘For a common vision,’ to emphasise the need to renew ties between Italy and Latin America. Minister Gentiloni emphasised the dramatic effects of climate change on countries in the Caribbean, to the extent that some are experiencing a serious threat to the very physical survival of their own land. The common theme of climate change also runs through the speech from the President of the Council, Matteo Renzi, who underlined the need for a more equal distribution of goods to combat hunger and poverty, and showed how the growth of Latin American investments in Europe and Italy were a sign of a relationship which now worked both ways.
In conclusion, Mario Giro hoped for a closer collaboration between Italy and Latin America in various international organisations; the participation of Italy in the regional and sub-regional development banks – very important for our businesses operating in the area – and cooperation with Latin America to address the huge challenges of our times. In his congratulations for the success of the Conference, Minister Gentiloni thanked Mario Giro for organising it and Donato Di Santo, who has been a tireless and enthusiastic Coordinator every year so far.
