Fabio Porta: “the committee of italians abroad pays tribute to the president that has restored pride to the italian people, both within and beyond our national boundaries.”
The President of the Committee of Italians Abroad, and promoter of the Chamber of Deputies’ Country System, Fabio Porta, sees the death of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi as “a serious loss even for Italians abroad, to whom President Ciampi always dedicated maximum attention and consideration, as evidenced by his numerous trips abroad, and his exciting and intense meetings with our communities”.
“I personally witnessed the speech that he gave to the Italian community in São Paulo precisely one year after his election, on 13 May 2000.
During that magnificent speech, which still remains vivid in my mind, and was decisive in my subsequent commitment to our compatriots abroad, President Ciampi talked about the pride associated with Italian citizenship, whether in Italy or abroad. Ciampi recalled how in his first speech after taking the constitutional oath he wanted to express how he felt…that he wanted to represent all Italians, ‘not only those who live and work within Italy itself, but also those who live, work and honour Italy from abroad’.
I would like to express my profound gratitude to this great Italian, the President of the national peace, the president of pride and love for the national flag and the national anthem. His memory will be kept alive and strong by all the Italian people.”
