Renzi tells the world that “Italy’s back”
Women’s Fashion Week is launched in February 2016 with Renzi, creative events and 182 collections on show
From gossip to politics, the program of presentations and women’s autumn/winter 2016/17 fashion shows kicked off with top names such as Gucci, Cavalli and Alberta Ferretti. The most eagerly awaited event, however, was Renzi’s arrival in the fashion capital.
“This is the first time, but it certainly won’t be the last”, commented Premier Matteo Renzi, opening Milan fashion week. “I am here to acknowledge a sector that is ready to write a better page for the future than in the past. We need to overcome the stereotypes out of respect for those who work in this sector, we can’t think that it is just a bit of fun for the few, as we sometimes do, because fashion is made up of men and women who work, who put passion into it, as businesspeople who have the courage to believe in it even when it isn’t easy”, he continued. “This will be a fashion week that marks a change, in an Italy that is passionate and wants a future. Fashion either is innovation or it isn’t, fashion teaches us about Italy’s future, which isn’t about nostalgia but about curiosity, more about innovation than tradition, and this is what fashion tells us.” “Italy’s back”, is Renzi’s message to the world.
The opening was celebrated with a lunch in the Sala Cariatidi at Palazzo Reale, attended by top Italian designers such as Alberta Ferretti, Armani, Donatella Versace and President of the Fashion Chamber Carlo Capasa, who enthusiastically welcomed “A Milan Women’s Fashion Week opened for the first time by a Prime Minister and closed with the presentation of the Sustainability Guidelines. This week has shown us a sector that is a key global player thanks to the uniqueness of our brands and our industry and the clear leader in Europe in terms of turnover. A week, in other words, of that fusion between tradition and innovation that has always marked our history”.
High profile guests. The Premier held a lunch at Palazzo Reale with 170 guests, most of whom were leading figures in the fashion world. Renzi was welcomed on arrival by the Prefect of Milan Alessandro Marangoni, Mayor Giuliano Pisapia, President of the National Fashion Chamber Carlo Capasa and President of ICE Riccardo Monti. The event was also attended by many of the most important Italian designers, such as Lavinia Biagiotti, Ennio Capasa, Anna Molinari, Alberta Ferretti, Angela Missoni, Renzo Rosso, Donatella Versace and Giorgio Armani, who commented that: “I am very happy to see the Premier here.”
Donatella Versace also commented that she was “very happy because this is the first premier that understands how important fashion is”.
