This year the Committee has once again rewarded companies that represent the excellence of the ‘Made in Italy’ label. They are linked by their product quality, ability to innovate and a strong presence in international markets” declared Luisa Todini, Chairperson of the Leonardo Committee. “Export business remains a strategic asset for our economy. The positive data for 2016 shows that the demand for ‘Made in Italy’ products continues to be strong throughout the world and is supported by a solid industrial structure.

In 2016, the companies participating in the Leonardo Committee achieved a total turnover of € 350 billion, of which 54% went to exports. “On the one hand” added Todini “we must strengthen our relationship with Europe and in Europe and seize the opportunities that are opening up in major markets outside Europe. One of these is China, which promises to be very receptive to our brand. On the other hand, we must encourage the inflow of foreign capital, as we have argued in our Forum of last October. The national economy is increasingly attractive to foreign investment and this is a good thing. When it is made within the rules and with the intention of creating growth and employment, FDI is indeed welcome.

Italy is the best natural hub for services and logistics. We have to liberalise the framework for investment to ensure that our natural resources have sufficient capital and are a source of growth rather than regrets.

The Comitato Leonardo (www.comitatoleonardo.it) was established in 1993, based on the joint initiative of Senator Sergio Pininfarina and Senator Gianni Agnelli, of Confindustria, of the Italian National Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) and of a group of entrepreneurs, with the goal of promoting and asserting ‘Italian Quality’ throughout the world. Today, its members include entrepreneurs, artists, scientists and men of culture and it avails itself of the sponsorship and the cooperation of the Institutional Bodies responsible for promoting Italian companies abroad. Comitato Leonardo does not want to be a mere showcase for promoting the Made in Italy brand, but it intends to play an active role in a variety of initiatives, among which that of granting scholarships to graduating university students in topics linked to internationalization. Among the members of the Comitato Leonardo, there are 161 companies, the overall turnover of which was approximately 350 billion euro over the past year, with a 54% quota abroad.
