Alla fine degli anni 2000, l’Archivio di Stato dell’Albania ritrovò nei suoi magazzini due sacchetti di iuta segnati con una semplice etichetta: “Corrispondenza dei cittadini italiani in Albania”. Centinaia di lettere, mai giunte a destinazione, scritte ai propri parenti tra il 1945 e il 1946 dagli Italiani – ex-soldati, ma anche operai, medici, commercianti, ingegneri, giunti durante l’occupazione italiana – che alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale si trovavano in Albania in attesa di essere rimpatriati. Da una riflessione su questa vicenda da parte di Adrian Paci, uno dei più interessanti artisti operanti in Italia, e Roland Sejko, regista e vincitore di un David di Donatello, è nata la mostra “Sue Proprie Mani”, a cura di Cristiana Perrella, allestita al MAXXI di Roma fino al prossimo 7 giugno.
The (Missing) Letters of Italians in Albania on Display at the MAXXI
At the end of the 2000s, the State Archives of Albania found two jute bags in its stores marked with a simple label: ‘Correspondence of Italian citizens in Albania.’ Hundreds of letters that never reached their destination were written between 1945 and 1946 by Italians to their relatives. The writers included ex-soldiers and also workers, doctors, businessmen and engineers who had come over to Albania during the Italian occupation and were waiting to be repatriated at the end of the Second World War.
A reflection on this event by Adrian Paci, one of the most interesting artists working in Italy, and Roland Sejko, director and winner of a David di Donatello, resulted in the exhibition ‘Sue Proprie Mani,’ curated by Cristiana Perrella and held at the MAXXI in Rome until 7 June.
