Dichiarazione del Presidente Mattarella per la scomparsa del Presidente emerito della Repubblica, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi
“La morte di Carlo Azeglio Ciampi mi addolora profondamente. Con grande intensità esprimo i sentimenti di vicinanza, di solidarietà e di gratitudine ai suoi familiari, sapendo di interpretare così l’animo degli italiani, che hanno apprezzato e amato il loro Presidente della Repubblica, con il suo stile istituzionale, con la sua fedeltà alla democrazia e alla Costituzione, sempre attento alle parti più svantaggiate della società, sempre appassionato in quel lavoro di rafforzamento dei fili che legano il nostro popolo. Ciampi è stato un grande italiano e un grande europeo. La stima e la considerazione di cui la sua figura ha goduto e gode in tutto il Continente e nel mondo è il giusto tributo a una vita spesa per il bene comune, e costituisce un grande privilegio per l’intero Paese. Anche grazie a uomini come Ciampi, l’Italia ha ottenuto e meritato un prestigio sul piano internazionale che oggi va a beneficio dell’intera nostra comunità.
Le grandi capacità di Ciampi e il suo forte senso delle istituzioni lo hanno portato a svolgere con maestria le funzioni di Governatore della Banca d’Italia e, anche in momenti difficili, è riuscito a conseguire risultati preziosi. Quando è stato chiamato, in uno dei passaggi più drammatici della vicenda repubblicana, ad assumere la guida del governo nazionale, ha adempiuto al proprio dovere mostrando altissime qualità, unite a un profondo rispetto per il Parlamento. E’ stato un vero uomo di Stato, che ha prestato con visioni lungimiranti il suo servizio in ruoli di grande rilevanza politica – Presidente del Consiglio e Ministro del Tesoro – avendo nella mente e nel cuore una incrollabile fede democratica e la profonda convinzione che l’Italia ha nella sua gente e nella sua società le risorse per generare un nuovo sviluppo e per contribuire, in modo decisivo, al rilancio del progetto europeo.
Ciampi ha legato il suo nome alla nascita dell’euro, e alla non scontata partecipazione dell’Italia al gruppo di testa. La determinazione di Ciampi è diventata un motore trainante per l’intero Paese. Ha poi sofferto per le incertezze e le contraddizioni dell’Unione europea, fino alle più recenti difficoltà. Se l’Italia tuttavia ha ancora un ruolo importante da giocare nel Continente, e se può, a testa alta, collaborare per costruire il futuro comune, lo deve in buona misura alla passione e alla fede europeistica di uomini come Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
Quando fu eletto Presidente della Repubblica, decise con grande energia di spendere il suo enorme capitale di credibilità per unire il Paese. E il suo magistero di unità ha incontrato l’ammirazione e il consenso degli italiani. Rinsaldare le radici storiche, ridare significato e valore ai simboli nazionali era per lui tutt’uno con la costruzione di un futuro migliore, di un’Italia aperta al mondo perché protagonista in Europa. Gli italiani non dimenticheranno il Presidente Ciampi. Continueranno ad apprezzarlo, e a considerarlo un esempio di competenza, di dedizione, di generosità, di passione. Ai suoi familiari e ai suoi amici, accanto al ricordo incancellabile dei momenti più intimi, il privilegio e la responsabilità di tenere viva la memoria pubblica di Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Sono certo che tutte le istituzioni saranno al loro fianco e daranno loro il massimo sostegno”.

Partigiano. Governatore della Banca d’Italia. Ministro del Tesoro. Presidente del Consiglio. Capo dello Stato. Nato a Livorno il 9 dicembre 1920, Ciampi era stato il decimo presidente della Repubblica, dal 1999 al 2006. In precedenza era stato governatore della Banca d’Italia dal 1979 al 1993, presidente del Consiglio di un governo tecnico (1993), ministro del Tesoro e del Bilancio del primo governo Prodi. è stato il primo capo del governo e primo capo dello Stato non parlamentare della storia della Repubblica.

“The death of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi grieves me deeply. I would like to express my profound feelings of closeness, solidarity and gratitude to his family, knowing full well that I am likewise conveying the sentiments of the Italian people, who have appreciated and loved their President of the Republic, with his institutional style, and his loyalty to democracy and the Constitution, always attentive to the most disadvantaged segments of society, always passionate in his work of strengthening the bonds that unite our people. Ciampi was a great Italian and a great European. The esteem and regard that he enjoyed and continues to enjoy throughout the continent and around the world is a fitting tribute to a life spent for the common good, and is a great privilege for the entire country. It is thanks to men like Ciampi that Italy has now deservedly obtained a level of prestige on the international scene that benefits our entire community.
Ciampi’s incredible ability and dedication to the institutions allowed him to skilfully serve as Governor of the Bank of Italy and to achieve valuable results, even in difficult times. When he was called upon to assume the leadership of the national government during one of our Republic’s most dramatic transitions, he fulfilled his duty by showing great integrity, and a profound respect for our Parliament. He was a true statesman who, with a far-reaching outlook, served in positions of great political importance, as Prime Minister and Minister of the Treasury, with his heart and mind consumed by an unshakable faith in democracy, and a profound conviction that the Italian people and our society have all the resources necessary to generate new developments and to decisively contribute to the revival of the European project.
Ciampi’s name is inextricably linked to the rise of the Euro and Italy’s participation in the pioneering group, which could not have been taken for granted. Ciampi’s determination has become a driving force for the entire country. He subsequently suffered the uncertainties and contradictions of the European Union, even including our most recent difficulties. In fact, if Italy still has an important role to play on the Continent, and if it is able to contribute to the construction of our common future, with its head held high, this is largely owed to the passion and European faith of men like Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
When the President of the Republic was elected, he enthusiastically decided to use his enormous credibility to unite the country. And his mastery of unity was welcomed with great admiration and approval by the Italian people. Under his guidance, reinforcing our historical roots and giving renewed meaning and value to our national symbols, was combined with an effort to build a better future, for an Italy that would be open to the world, because it was a European protagonist. The Italian people will never forget President Ciampi. They will continue to appreciate him, and to see him as an example of competence, dedication, generosity and passion. In addition to the indelible memory of his most personal moments, his friends and family have the privilege and the responsibility of keeping the public memory of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi alive. I am certain that all the institutions will be by their side, and will give them their utmost support.”
