Al centro del colloquio, questioni quali la Libia, il ruolo dell’Italia, l’emergenza umanitaria in aree di conflitto, la lotta al Daesh, i due fucilieri italiani bloccati in India
Il Ministro degli Affari Esteri, Paolo Gentiloni, ha incontrato alla Farnesina il Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite, Ban Ki-moon. La Libia, il ruolo dell’Italia, l’emergenza umanitaria nelle aree di conflitto come la Siria, la lotta al Daesh, ma anche la questione dei due fucilieri di Marina italiani bloccati da oltre tre anni in India, sono stati al centro della conferenza stampa congiunta.
“L’Italia è pronta a fare tutto il possibile per sostenere le decisioni dell’ONU, dopo un accordo tra le parti in Libia, per mantenere i risultati raggiunti sul terreno”, ha affermato il Ministro Gentiloni, aggiungendo che l’Italia “spinge tutte le parti e i Paesi della regione a contribuire a buoni risultati che non sono scontati”.
Il Segretario Generale dell’ONU, dal canto suo, ha detto di accogliere “con favore i progressi” del negoziato in corso e si è augurato che “le parti possano ottemperare ad un accordo per un governo di unità nazionale in Libia”.
“Il ruolo dell’Italia è fondamentale” nell’ambito degli “sforzi dell’ONU per promuovere il dialogo in Libia”, ha detto Ban Ki-moon, sottolineando che le Nazioni Unite hanno sviluppato “una partnership molto forte con l’Italia che è pietra miliare per la pace internazionale”.
Ban Ki-moon ha ricordato che l’Italia è il primo contributore occidentale alle missioni di peacekeeping come quella in Libano, che guida, e che ha un ruolo di “stabilizzazione fondamentale”.
Infine, il Ministro Gentiloni ha sottolineato di aver nuovamente raccomandato al Segretario Generale dell’ONU “la questione dei due fucilieri di Marina bloccati da oltre tre anni in India, chiedendogli di prendere in considerazione un suo nuovo intervento per una questione così rilevante per l’Italia”.
Gentiloni Meets Ban Ki-moon

Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni met Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon at the Foreign Ministry. The focus of the joint press conference was on Libya, Italy’s role, the humanitarian emergency in conflict areas such as Syria, the fight against Daesh, but also the question of the two fusiliers from the Italian Navy who have been detained in India for over three years.
“Italy is ready to do everything possible to support the decisions of the UN to maintain the results achieved on the ground after an agreement between the parties in Libya,” said Minister Gentiloni, adding that Italy “urges all the parties and countries in the region to contribute to good results, which cannot be taken for granted.”
The UN Secretary-General, for his part, said he “welcomes the progress” in the negotiations under way and hoped that “the parties will comply with an agreement for a national unity government in Libya.”
“Italy’s role is vital” within the “UN’s efforts to promote a dialogue in Libya,” said Ban Ki-moon, stressing that the United Nations has developed “a very strong partnership with Italy that serves as a milestone for international peace.”
Ban Ki-moon recalled that Italy is the greatest Western contributor to peacekeeping missions such as the one in Lebanon. It is a driving force with a “fundamental stabilisation” role.
Finally, the Minister Gentiloni stressed that he had once again urged the UN Secretary General to address “the issue of the two naval fusiliers detained in India for over three years, asking him to consider a new intervention for an issue that is very pressing for Italy.”
