Italian engineering conquering international markets
Italferr, a model of “Italian system” excellence
Carlo Carganico is the new Chief Executive Officer for Italferr S.p.A., an Italian National Railways (FS) Group engineering company. Carganico was among the proponents of the many microprocessor electronic innovations applied to industrial automation in our country. Already the Managing Director of Italcertifer, an FS Group company in the certification segment of the high-speed and conventional line sectors, he was appointed Managing Director and General Manager of Italferr S.p.A. in July 2016.

The new Italferr management has expanded into a strategy period at the same time as the FS Group mission relaunch, culminating in the recent presentation of a new, ambitious 2017-2026 business plan. Italferr, already active in 20 countries and 5 continents, will have a decisive role in supporting and achieving group targets as per the scenario outlined by the new business plan. The company will construct strategic infrastructure projects in our country and for the completion of high-speed lines, as well as define improved and consistent safety standards throughout the RFI management network. However, in addition to operating as a key actor for the creation of works and investments on the national network, Italferr will operate on the international scene, among the 7 strongest and most influential industry players in the world, facing major challenges in achieving set objectives. Without neglecting projects in the old continent of Europe, which ensure the company historically profitable and “safe” contracts from the point of view of “country risks,” Italferr is activating all-around strategies targeted to seize many opportunities in foreign markets, such as: the Arabian Peninsula, India, and Far East Asia. In these areas, where Italferr is already on hand with high-profile projects, the mission is to consolidate and expand the sphere of interests and skills. In Iran, in particular, Italferr has recently signed a contract for Project Management Consultancy (PMC) services aimed at the implementation of the first high speed line in the country and consolidating its growth in the Middle East.

Turkey too, despite a delicate geopolitical situation, represents a market where Italferr is implementing important projects (the inauguration of the Istanbul ” Eurasia Tunnel” in December 2016). A renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding – MOU – between the Italian National Railways company and their Turkish counterparts is in fact expected shortly. Special attention will be given by Italferr to the extraordinary opportunities presented by the US market. There, the railways sector is inevitably destined to grow exponentially and the company, consulting with the FS holding company, is developing strategies aimed at acquiring a local engineering company to develop articulated business and operate on the medium and long term.

In fact, Italferr has set ambitious development and growth targets. Within 10 years, the expectation is to double revenues, including through the support that Italferr will give to Italian FS companies, in order to operate in the future as a “General Contractor” for the acquisition of jobs at all levels. The objective is also to become a driving force for the “Italian system” as a whole and to contribute to the economic recovery of our country. A range of “multidisciplinary” skills and engineering services, not just restricted to the railways and high-speed sector, are today the company’s strength in the markets. These features will enable Italferr to seize various opportunities in different areas and with different needs. In future corporate development strategies, training, continuous updating and the long experience acquired by Italferr personnel will make all the difference. It is in fact quality, and not just cost, that will be the decisive factor in the choice that developing countries will consider in coming years regarding the development of policies for the creation of their works and strategic infrastructures.

Sustainable infrastructures, care for the Environment and Innovation – Italferr operates through an environmental policy based on precise responsibility criteria aimed at the preservation and enhancement of territory in its environmental and social values. The company adopts advanced quality systems and works in connection with scientific and academic entities par excellence, such as Universities, Research and Development Centres, specialised bodies and Technical Sector Agencies (ENEA) for the definition of best practices, the studying of tools and models for energy efficiency and for the proper use of resources. To this new approach, they add the use of innovative tools such as BIM technology and new and more dynamic and efficient internal processes from the standpoint of interaction with group companies and future integration with ANAS skills and experiences.
